Two people were hospitalized after a drunk-driving accident in San Antonio, TX. The crash occurred at around 10:21 p.m. on Friday, April 1.

Details About the Drunk-Driver Crash

On Friday, April 1, around 10:21 p.m., a man was driving north on S. Frio Street in a maroon 2009 Toyota Camry. The driver struck a police vehicle that was driving south on the same street.

The Toyota Camry then fled the scene of the crash and continued to drive north on S. Frio Street. A UTSA Police Sergeant spotted the vehicle driving at a high rate of speed and gave chase.

According to police, the driver of the Camry started driving around the southbound lanes to get around traffic in the northbound lanes. He then ran a red light at W. Commerce Street and continued north at a high rate of speed.

The driver eventually lost control of his vehicle after driving through the intersection of W. Martin Street. The car ended up on the sidewalk, crashed into a metal light pole, spun onto the road, lost a tire, and crashed into a second metal light pole. The impact with the second light pole caused the Camry to flip onto its roof. According to authorities, the car finally came to a stop at the intersection of N. Frio Street and Medina.

There were two passengers inside the Camry along with the driver. One of the passengers was ejected from the vehicle at the time of the crash. She was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. The second passenger was taken to another local hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the Toyota Camry was found to be intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was arrested at the scene and charged with intoxication assault.

The Effects of Alcohol on a Driver

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), one person dies every 52 minutes in the U.S. from drunk-driving accidents. In Texas alone, 20,292 deaths occurred between 2004 to 2018 due to alcohol-impaired driving.

Unfortunately, many drivers believe that they can handle the effects of alcohol and still safely drive their vehicles. What many don’t understand is just how much alcohol can affect a driver:

  • Altered judgment and decision-making

  • Impaired vision

  • Reduced coordination

  • Reduced focus and concentration

  • Slower response time

  • Increased confidence

  • Increased likelihood of relaxation or drowsiness

If a person has consumed any amount of alcohol, they should not be getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. Every driver has a responsibility to keep themselves and other drivers safe by finding other modes of transportation when intoxicated.

If you choose to drink, find a trusted friend to hold on to your keys and make other ride arrangements ahead of time. Doing so can save yourself and others on the road from a severe or fatal crash.
