11 people were injured after a T-bone crash caused one of the vehicles to run into a food truck. The crash occurred on Friday, April 8, in Austin, TX.

The Food Truck Crash

On April 8, Austin-Travis County EMS officials stated that two vehicles collided in a “T-bone type collision” at the intersection of Barton Springs Road and Sterzing Street. According to Austin officials, the T-bone crash pushed one of the vehicles into a group of pedestrians who were standing in front of a food truck.

Nine of the victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while two others refused treatment or transport.

Two of the victims suffered potentially life-threatening injuries while two others were seriously injured. The other five victims had non-life-threatening injuries. The company Sorenson released a statement on their website saying that 10 of their employees were hurt in the food truck accident.

According to the company, the employees were in Austin to attend the DeafNation Expo on Saturday, April 9.

According to the Austin Police Department, both drivers involved in the T-bone crash are cooperating with the crash investigation. They were the only occupants of their vehicles at the time of the crash. One of the drivers was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Authorities are unsure what led to the collision, but are continuing their investigation into the crash.

The Main Causes of T-Bone Crashes

T-bone crashes, also known as side-impact collisions, can be especially dangerous because one vehicle is struck perpendicular by another. This results in the driver or passenger side being directly hit by the other vehicle. These types of accidents are more likely to occur at intersections in highly populated areas.

Unfortunately, the causes of T-bone crashes are mainly due to driver error and can be avoided by responsible driving. While accidents can happen anywhere at any time, the main causes of T-bone accidents include:

  • Speeding

  • Running a red light

  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol

  • Making an illegal left turn

  • Rolling through a stop sign

  • Failure to yield the right of way

  • Distracted driving

  • Drowsy driving

  • Vehicle malfunction

The effects of a T-bone crash can leave victims with severe injuries and extensive damage to their vehicles. However, most of these accidents can be avoided if drivers choose to obey all traffic signs and signals when behind the wheel. #drivingtips

Be especially cautious when entering an intersection or four-way stop and never assume that another vehicle is going to also obey the rules of the road. Putting these tips into practice could save your life and the lives of others on the road.
