Man Dead After Single-Vehicle Accident

A 39-year-old man is dead following a single-vehicle accident on the South Side of San Antonio. The crash occurred around 4 a.m. on Monday, February 21, on Palo Alto Road.

The Single-Vehicle Accident

On Monday, February 21, around 4 a.m., the 39-year-old driver of a pickup truck was heading north on Highway 16. According to the San Antonio Police Department, the driver hit a slick spot on the road, causing him to drift off the highway.

Police stated that the truck went down a grassy embankment and landed on its side against a couple of trees. Because the pickup truck landed on its side, the 39-year-old male driver was pinned inside the vehicle.

The San Antonio Fire Department cut the male driver free from the vehicle and EMS took him to a local hospital in critical condition. According to authorities, the man later died from his injuries.

There was also a female passenger inside the truck at the time of the crash. She suffered no injuries but was taken to the same hospital by police. Police are still conducting an investigation into the crash.

Safety Tips for Driving in the Snow and Ice

Although Texas isn’t known for winter weather conditions, snow and ice can make an appearance every now and then. When this type of weather hits the roads, it’s important that Texans know how to safely drive.

In order to decrease the amount of winter weather crashes, here are some safety tips for drivers to follow:

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly — Slowly putting pressure on the gas pedal can help you regain traction and avoid peeling out. Take extra time to slow down on icy roads.

  • Drive below the speed limit — Driving slowly can give drivers more time to stop, turn, and accelerate on the roads.

  • Increase your following distance — In winter weather conditions, drivers should increase their following distance to eight to ten seconds. This allows drivers enough space to safely come to a stop.

  • Know how to handle your brakes — The AAA recommends using threshold braking during winter weather conditions. To do this, keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply slow and steady pressure to the brake pedal.

  • Avoid stopping if possible — Instead of coming to a complete stop, slow down enough to a roll to avoid the possibility of skidding.

  • Don’t gas it on a hill — Applying gas on a hill can cause your wheels to spin. Instead, apply gas before you reach the hill and allow the inertia to carry you up it.

Ultimately, the best way to remain safe in snowy and icy conditions is to stay home. If you must leave the house, use these safety tips to ensure you and other drivers can arrive safely to your destination.
