6 Teenagers Injured After a Single Rollover Crash

Six teenagers were injured after a single rollover crash on Thursday, December 16, in Hamilton, TX.

A 17-year-old male was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck at an unsafe speed down a gravel road. The driver lost control, hit a culvert, and rolled over. There were 6 teenagers in the truck and all were injured in the crash.

The Single Rollover Crash

According to Texas DPS, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling northbound on CR 101 when the crash occurred. The incident happened at around 11:45 p.m.

DPS said that there were 6 teenagers in the truck at the time of the crash. A 17-year-old passenger was ejected and partially pinned underneath the truck. He had to be extricated by firefighters and was taken to a nearby hospital for an incapacitating injury. Four other teenagers were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries, which ranged from minor to very serious. The 17-year-old driver was taken to a local ER after the crash.

Texas DPS is reminding drivers to always wear safety belts to “reduce the probability of being seriously injured or killed in a traffic accident.” The crash is still under investigation.

Teenager-Related Crashes

According to the CDC, motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of teen deaths in the U.S. Almost 2,400 teens ages 13 to 19 were killed in car crashes in 2019. Because so many teenagers are injured or killed in car crashes each year, more awareness must be brought to teenager-related crashes.

The main factors that put teenagers at risk for crashes include:

  • Inexperience

  • Nighttime and weekend driving

  • Not using seat belts

  • Distracted driving

  • Speeding

  • Alcohol use

  • Drug or other substance use

Because all of these factors can result in severe or fatal crashes for teenagers and others involved, it’s important for parents and their teens to be aware of these risks. Seat belts should be worn at all times, alcohol and drugs should never be used, and any possible distractions should be avoided. In addition, teenagers must follow posted speed limits and obey all traffic laws.

Edinburg Car Accident Attorneys Here for Every Member of Your Family

Once teenagers get their license and head out on the road, they feel a sense of freedom and liberation. It can be easy for them to disregard all safety and traffic laws they learned from their parents and driving instructors.

However, teenagers must be kept accountable for their actions when driving. Failure to do so can result in serious injuries or fatalities.
