A mother and three of her children were hit by a car while crossing the street after a car accident occurred on Sunday, June 5, 2022.
The Injured Pedestrians
On Sunday, June 5, at 5:40 p.m., a mother and her three children were attempting to cross the street of McCart Avenue in Fort Worth when they were struck. Two vehicles in the nearby area of Sycamore School Road had crashed into each other, resulting in one of the vehicles swerving into the mother and her children.
Police and medical help arrived at the scene soon after, and the mother was transported to a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, the three children were taken to a nearby children’s hospital for treatment for their injuries.
Later the same day, officials reported that all four injured victims are expected to make a full recovery, but two of the children were seriously injured. The more seriously injured children are still receiving medical care at this time.
So far, there have been no reports of further injuries resulting from this accident. Charges have also not been submitted, and the investigation is still underway and is being conducted by the Traffic Investigation Unit, according to Fort Worth police.
The Dangerous Injuries of Pedestrians Involved in Car Accidents
Car accidents that involve pedestrians can pose some lead to serious injuries that may have life-threatening results. Unlike drivers and passengers, pedestrians aren’t protected by tons of machinery, seatbelts, or airbags when these accidents occur. Vehicles that hit pedestrians put their full force up against the small unprotected body of a human.
The Texas Department of Transportation keeps a record of how many pedestrians are involved in motor vehicle crashes each year, and looking at the numbers can give a clear idea of how dangerous these accidents can be:
In 2020, Texas saw a total of 4,844 crashes involving at least one pedestrian.
A total of 5,180 people were involved in pedestrian-car accidents in Texas in 2020, and only 260 came out uninjured.
Out of all of the pedestrians struck, 717 died as a result of their crash.
Out of all Texas pedestrian-involved accidents in 2020, roughly 15% resulted in at least one fatality.
For context, while nearly 15% of pedestrian-car accidents are fatal, less than half of one percentage of simple auto accidents result in a death.
Whether you are a pedestrian or a driver, take care to mind your surroundings on the road or sidewalk. As a driver, watch out for any pedestrians, and be ready to step on the brake, whether you have the right of way or not.
As a pedestrian, you can protect yourself by following road laws and watching out for any vehicles that may unexpectedly swerve or ignore traffic signs or signals. You might not have time to move entirely out of the way of a speeding vehicle, but even just a few inches may mean the difference between life and death.
Pedestrian car accident cases can still be covered by a car accident attorney. Call the Law Office of Bobby Garcia to find the assistance you may be looking for in a pedestrian-involved car accident case.
