One person is dead and three others are injured following a three-vehicle wreck in Lumberton, Texas. The crash occurred on Saturday, August 6, at around 12:45 p.m.

The 3-Vehicle Wreck

On Saturday, August 6, at around 12:45 p.m., a 2014 Kia Soul was heading north on Highway 96 when it slowed down for a vehicle attempting to turn right.

At the same time, a 2001 GMC pickup truck heading north had moved over onto the shoulder and then swerved left back onto the road, where it hit the Kia Soul. The Kia was then hit again by a 2006 Peterbilt semi-truck also heading north.

The 41-year-old driver of the Kia Soul was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. There were two passengers inside the Kia at the time of the crash: an 8-year-old child who was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and a 36-year-old woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 75-year-old driver of the GMC pickup was transported to the same hospital for treatment. Reports stated that the 50-year-old driver of the Peterbilt truck was not injured during the crash.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is conducting an investigation into this deadly crash.

The Common Causes of Multi-Vehicle Wrecks

Multi-vehicle wrecks can be especially dangerous depending on the number of vehicles involved and the severity of each impact. To avoid these types of wrecks, it’s important to understand some of the common causes:

  • Speeding — Driving at a high rate of speed can make it difficult to stop for sudden changes in traffic.

  • Distracted driving — Being distracted by cell phones, navigation systems, and other passengers can affect a driver’s reaction time on the road.

  • Drowsy driving — Driving while drowsy can increase a driver’s chances of falling asleep at the wheel or losing focus on the road.

  • Tailgating — Following too closely behind another vehicle can cause that driver to hit the vehicle in front of them during sudden stops.

  • Driving while intoxicated — When a person drives while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they have a greater chance of crashing due to inhibited coordination and focus.

  • Hazardous weather conditions — Rain, fog, snow, and ice can all cause hazardous conditions on the road that contribute to multi-vehicle wrecks.

  • Failing to follow traffic laws — Drivers who fail to signal during a lane change, stop at a stop sign, and follow the speed limit have a greater chance of causing a multi-vehicle crash.

You can avoid most of the common causes of multi-vehicle wrecks by practicing safe driving habits and obeying traffic laws. A severe or even fatal crash is not worth the text you had to send or the sudden need to speed. The next time you get behind the wheel, make an effort to put your entire focus and attention on the road in front of you.
