How Weather Can Affect Your Driving

Although some accidents have nothing to do with the weather, a great number of them are caused by various types of weather conditions.

In order to safely drive in all types of weather, it’s important to know how certain conditions can affect your driving:

  • Rain — Rain can affect the road conditions as well as your ability to safely drive. Roads can become slippery from precipitation, which can also reduce visibility.

  • Fog — Fog can greatly decrease visibility, making it difficult to see other vehicles, animals, and road hazards.

  • High winds — High winds can move your car on the road and make it hard to maintain control. In addition, high winds can blow hazardous objects onto the roadway.

  • Low temperatures — When temperatures fall, rain and sleet can form into sheets of ice. If black ice forms, drivers may not be able to spot it and can lose control of their vehicle.

  • Snow — Although snow is a rare occurrence in many areas of Texas, it can still happen and create dangerous driving conditions. Drivers are at a greater risk of drifting and visibility can be reduced significantly.

Understanding the effects weather can have on your driving can help you better prepare when you hit the road. It is also important to note that reckless driving in hazardous weather conditions can lead to severe or fatal crashes.

Before you leave the house, always make an effort to check the weather conditions expected for the day. If weather conditions become dangerous while you’re driving, slow down and drive with caution until you can safely pull over or reach your destination.
